Eating disorders can affect more than just your weight

Eating disorders are very complicated: they're not just mental health disorders, they can also cause a whole host of immediate and long-term problems with physical health too. All kinds of eating disorders can ultimately cause serious damage to various organ systems, and for some people with eating disorders the effects are eventually fatal. Getting treatment can reduce the risk of harm, but in some cases, enough damage has already been done that the effects are permanent. The effects of anorexia can be particularly devastating, due to the fact that people with this mental health disorder severely restrict their caloric intake. In the long term, the body is starved of both calories and essential vitamins and minerals, leading to all kinds of medical problems: cardiac problems such as low heart rate and arrhythmia, inability to regulate body temperature, anemia, loss of bone density, and dehydration. If treatment isn't successful people with anorexia risk death due to o

Mourinho: Costa, Cahill fit for Community Shield

Chelsea striker Diego Costa and defender Gary Cahill will be fit to play against Arsenal in the Community Shield at Wembley on Sunday, manager Jose Mourinho has said. Spain striker Costa limped off with a hamstring problem in a pre-season friendly against Barcelona in the U.S., while Cahill suffered a suspected broken nose after scoring an 85th-minute equaliser against the Spanish champions. "All good, yes," Mourinho told a news conference on Friday when asked about the fitness of Costa and Cahill. Costa scored 20 league goals for Chelsea in his debut season at Stamford Bridge after joining from Atletico Madrid for 32 million pounds ($50.09 million), but the striker missed large parts of the campaign with a persistent hamstring problem. Mourinho, however, has no long-term concerns over the 26-year-old's fitness and says Loic Remy and Radamel Falcao will provide Costa with stiff competition during the season. "No concerns, I am not worried about it," he

Aston Villa sign French midfielder

Aston Villa have signed French midfielder Jordan Veretout from Ligue 1 club Nantes on a five-year contract, the Premier League side said on Friday. The 22-year-old has joined for an undisclosed fee reported in British media to be around seven million pounds ($10.9 million). "I'm really pleased Jordan decided to choose Aston Villa over the other options he had and opt to continue his development with us," manager Tim Sherwood told the club's website. "He is only 22-years-old but he is vastly experienced for someone that age. He has played over 140 games in Ligue 1 and is a really exciting young player. "I know he is very highly rated over in France so we are delighted to get this deal over the line." Veretout is the fourth player to arrive at Villa Park from Ligue 1 during the close season following the signings of Jordan Amavi, Idrissa Gueye and Jordan Ayew.

Olympics-Rights groups slam decision to give Beijing Winter Games

Human rights activists on Friday criticized the decision to award Beijing the 2022 Winter Olympics, saying the International Olympic Committee had sent the wrong message at a time of growing government pressure on activists and civil society. Campaigners say human rights have deteriorated markedly in China since Beijing held the 2008 Summer Games. The last two years under President Xi Jinping's administration have been marked by a sweeping crackdown on dissidents, activists and human rights lawyers. Beijing beat the Kazakh city of Almaty to win the 2022 Winter Olympics, after all the other cities which had considered bids, like Oslo, dropped out. "The IOC's awarding of the 2022 Olympics to China is a slap in the face to China's besieged human rights activists," said Sophie Richardson, China director at Human Rights Watch. "Over the next seven years, the IOC has enormous work to do in China to win the credibility on human rights that will ensure a suc

Plane debris to arrive in France: airport sources

Paris - The piece of wing found on a beach on the Indian Ocean island of La Reunion will arrive in mainland France early Saturday for investigation, airport sources said. The two-metre-long flaperon, which has raised hopes of solving the mystery of the missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370, will leave the island at 9:15pm (1915 GMT) on Friday and arrive at Paris Orly airport at 06:20am (0420 GMT), the sources said. It will then be transported to the southern city of Toulouse for investigators to pore over in the hope of proving the wreckage came from the doomed MH370. Authorities have warned one small piece of plane debris was unlikely to completely clear up one of aviation's greatest puzzles. The Malaysia Airlines plane, en route to Beijing from Kuala Lumpur, disappeared without trace in March last year with 239 people on board. Officials have confirmed the debris comes from a Boeing 777 and only two others of this type are known to have crashed: one over Ukraine, t

Real Madrid signs defender Jesus Vallejo for 6 seasons

Real Madrid says it has signed teenage prospect Jesus Vallejo on a six-year contract, although the central defender will remain on loan with his current club Real Zaragoza for next season. Madrid and second-division Zaragoza reached a deal for the 18-year-old player on Friday, the teams said in statements on their websites. Spanish media reports say Madrid paid 5 million euros ($5.5 million) for the 18-year-old, who is expected to join Rafa Benitez's squad in the summer of 2016. Vallejo captained Spain's under-19 team that won the European championship in Greece this month and made 34 league appearances in Spain's second division for Zaragoza last season.

Anambra man sentenced 10 years for fraud

The Anambra State High court has sentenced one Esowane Henry Rotechi to ten years imprisonment for fraud. He has been prosecuted before Justice Mbonu-Nweyi at the court sitting in Onitsha on an eight-count charge that borders on conspiracy, obtaining money by false pretence and forgery, to the tune of N252 000. The convict had pleaded not guilty when he was first arraigned on July 12. Rotechi's troubles started in December 2010 when he presented himself as the legal adviser to a Chancellor of Enugu State University of Technology, in which capacity he obtained N150 000 from one Celestina with the promise to facilitate her admission into the Law Programme of the institution. He was arrested in September 2011, after the victim suspected that she had been duped. After diligent prosecution by the EFCC, Justice Mbonu-Nweyi pronounced the accused guilty and sentenced him to three years imprisonment on count one for conspiracy and seven years imprisonment on each of counts of

One Direction release surprise first single as a foursome

London - Best-selling boy band One Direction released a surprise first single as a foursome on Friday, two days after former member Zayn Malik announced a new record deal as solo artist. "Drag Me Down" follows November's "Night Changes" and is the first single the group, which came to prominence on British televised singing competition "The X Factor" in 2010, has put out since Malik said he was quitting the band in March. The foursome Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Niall Horan and Louis Tomlinson posted a video message on Twitter announcing the new single. "It's the first song from the new album that we've been working very, very hard on," Payne said in the video. In a separate post on his Twitter feed, Payne called the move "a bit of a surprise". The news came after Malik himself tweeted a picture on Wednesday of him signing papers at RCA Records. "I guess I never explained why I left, it was for this moment to b

Dinamo Zagreb fine player $110,000 for obscene gesture

Dinamo Zagreb have fined their Portuguese midfielder Paulo Machado $110,000 (70,800, 100,000 euros) after he responded to being booed by his own fans by showing them his middle finger during a Champions League game. The incident happened in the Croatian champions' third qualifying round, first leg against Norwegian outfit Molde on Tuesday, a match which finished 1-1. "I made a terrible mistake and I would like to apologise to the supporters, president, coach, the entire team and to my family as well," Machado told a press conference, according to the club's website. "It was a bad moment. I emphasise that I am sorry and that I will show on the field how much I respect both Dinamo and their supporters." Being replaced in the 65th minute of the match in Zagreb, the former Porto, Saint-Etienne, Toulouse and Olympiakos player was booed by the Dinamo fans as he left the field. He responded by showing his middle finger, immediately earning a red card for

Jovetic leaves City for Inter Milan on loan

Manchester City striker Stevan Jovetic has joined Inter Milan on an 18-month loan deal with a view to a permanent transfer, his Premier League parent club announced on Friday. The 25-year-old joined City from Fiorentina for 22 million pounds ($34.4 million) in 2013 but has struggled to impose himself at the Etihad Stadium where his progress was hampered by injury. "Everyone at City wishes Stevan well for his time with Inter," the club said in a statement on their website. The Montenegrin netted 11 times in 44 games for City but never came close to living up to the standards he set in Italy despite occasional flashes of his ability. A double in a 3-1 win over Liverpool at the start of last season was a rare bright spot in an otherwise difficult time at the club. After the arrival of striker Wilfried Bony in January, Jovetic was left out of manager Manuel Pellegrini's Champions League squad, underlining his place in the pecking order at City, who have an embarrass

Experimental Ebola vaccine could stop virus in West Africa

An experimental vaccine tested on thousands of people in Guinea exposed to Ebola seems to work and might help shut down the ongoing epidemic in West Africa, according to interim results from a study published Friday. There is currently no licensed treatment or vaccine for Ebola, which has so far killed more than 11,000 people in West Africa since the world's biggest outbreak began in the forest region of Guinea last year."If proven effective, this is going to be a game-changer," said Dr. Margaret Chan, Director-General of the World Health Organization, which sponsored the study. "It will change the management of the current outbreak and future outbreaks." Scientists have struggled for years to develop Ebola treatments and vaccines but have faced numerous hurdles, including the sporadic nature of outbreaks. Many past attempts have failed, including a recently abandoned drug cocktail being tested in West Africa by Tekmira Pharmaceuticals. Researchers gave on

SME sector to steer Nigeria into leading global economy

The Coordinator of the United Nations System in Nigeria, Pa Lamin Beyai, has emphasised the key role the informal sector could play in enhancing the country's economic growth. Beyai was speaking at a validation workshop on the report of the informal sector study conducted in the Nigeria State Employment and Expenditure for Results (SEEFOR) participating States of the Niger Delta. The UN official said the informal sector is critical to the growth of Nigeria’s economy and also will help in reducing poverty in the country. Beyai also stated that activities in the informal sector could also play a crucial role in actualizing the ambition of Nigeria becoming one of the top 20 economies in the world by the year 2020. Meanwhile, Secretary to the National Planning Commission, Bassey Akpanyung, has Akpanyung assured that the Federal Government is committed to rejuvenating and improving the operations of the informal sector at the national and sub- national levels, including the Nig

The journal ranked the universities based based on the amount of citations there are for the university’s work. South Africa dominated the top five, with Stellenbosch University and the University of KwaZulu-Natal taking fourth and fifth place respectively. Phil Baty, editor of the THE World University Rankings told the BBC World Service that the plan is to “develop more metrics to capture a wider range of activities at African universities” and the top 30 is designed “t

Real Madrid beat AC Milan 10-9 on penalties

A miss by AC Milan's 16-year-old reserve goalkeeper gave Real Madrid a 10-9 penalty shoot-out victory in an exhibition match in Shanghai on Thursday. The shoot-out followed a 0-0 stalemate after 90 minutes and sealed victory for Real Madrid in the China edition of the International Champions Cup. Both teams' goalkeepers ended up having to take a spot-kick with the score still tied after all outfield players had taken a turn. Madrid goalkeeper Kiko Casilla confidently strode to the penalty spot before hammering the ball past Milan teenager Gianluigi Donnarumma to put his side 10-9 ahead. The keepers then swapped positions with Donnarumma needing to score to keep AC Milan in the game, but the young Italian fired directly at Casilla who saved easily to seal victory for the Spanish club. The dramatic climax was the highlight of an otherwise disappointing match in which neither side came close to scoring from free play. Both clubs fielded strong line-ups -- Real Madrid star

Shell To Cut Down 6000 Workers

Royal Dutch Shell (RDSa.L) says it will axe 6,500 jobs this year and step up spending cuts, to deal with an extended period of lower oil prices. Besides, the company announced on Thursday in London the sale of a 33 per cent stake in the Showa Shell refinery in Japan to Idemitsu, for about $1.4 billion. The Anglo-Dutch company also said it was planning more asset disposals, bringing total asset sales between 2014 and 2018 to $50 billion. “We have to be resilient in a world where oil prices remain low for some time, whilst keeping an eye on recovery,’’ Chief Executive Officer Ben van Beurden said. Shell said it anticipated 6,500 staff and direct contractor reductions in 2015 from a total of nearly 100,000 employees. Lower oil prices have contributed to a 37 per cent drop in the oil and gas group’s second-quarter profits. And the group said it would reduce 2015 capital investment for the second time this year to $30 billion by 20 per cent from a year ago. Big oil companies have cut

Plane debris in Indian Ocean same type as MH370 - official

Air safety investigators have a "high degree of confidence" that aircraft debris found in the Indian Ocean is of a wing component unique to the Boeing 777, the same model as the Malaysia Airlines plane that disappeared last year, a US official said on Wednesday. Air safety investigators - one of them a Boeing investigator -have identified the component as a "flaperon" from the trailing edge of a 777 wing, the US official said. A French official close to an investigation of the debris confirmed on Wednesday that French law enforcement is on site to examine a piece of airplane wing found on the French island of Reunion, in the western Indian Ocean. A French television network was airing video from its Reunion affiliate of the debris. US investigators are examining a photo of the debris. The US and French officials spoke on condition that they not be named because they aren't authorised to speak publicly. If the debris turns out to be from the missing aircraf

Africa hots up in Olympics qualifiers

The continent of Africa gets busy this weekend as countries aim to book a ticket to an eight-nation tournament in Senegal with the top three finishers securing tickets to Rio 2016 Olympics in Brazil. Nigeria travel toPointe Noire with the hope of finishing up positively after a 2-1 home victory over Congo in the first leg. The Zambia-Ivory Coast, South Africa-Zimbabwe and Tunisia-Morocco ties are also delicately balanced while Egypt and Mali should progress at the expense of Uganda and Gabon respectively. Zambia must do without defender Boyd Mkandawire, red-carded during a goalless first leg in Abidjan, and be wary having held Nigeria away in the All-Africa Games only to fail at home. South Africa, angered by what they believe was a "home town decision" that earned Zimbabwe a penalty and an undeserved 1-1 draw, warmed up for the return game with an impressive 2-0 victory over Rwanda. "It has been a long time (15 years) since South Africa last competed at the Oly

Cech sale a ‘favour’ for Arsenal, says Flamini

Arsenal midfielder Mathieu Flamini has stoked the fires ahead of the Gunners' Community Shield meeting with Chelsea on Sunday by saying the champions have done them a "good favour" by selling Petr Cech. The Czech goalkeeper ended an 11-year stint at Stamford Bridge after moving across London to the Emirates Stadium last month for a fee of 10million (14.2m euros; $15.6 million dollars). "I was surprised by (Chelsea boss Jose) Mourinho because he really doesn't do that," Flamini told British media on Thursday. "He (Mourinho) is a competitor and usually doesn't like to sell any players to his rivals, but it's a good favour for us and now we have to take advantage. "It's a top signing. That's why we have been lucky on this one," added the French midfielder. The 33-year-old Cech was allowed to move from west to north London -- despite Mourinho's reluctance to let him go -- after losing his place in the Chelsea side to B

Tevez steer nine-man Boca to 1-0 win over Belgrano

Carlos Tevez inspired nine-man Boca Juniors to a 1-0 away win over Belgrano that gave them a three-point lead at the top of the Argentine championship. Boca, who scored through Argentina midfielder Fernando Gago in the 37th minute of Sunday's match in Cordoba, were down to 10 men for the last half hour and nine for the last 22 minutes. Midfielder Pablo Perez and defender Gino Peruzzi were sent off after picking up second bookings in a foul-riddled match in which Tevez was the target of some hard marking but got on with the game and kept Boca afloat. "You have to know how to read games. When we were able to play, we played. When we had to fight, we fought," Tevez told reporters. "Boca can do big things, we have to stay on this route, we're doing well," he added after his second match since returning to his first club following a decade abroad. Boca have 40 points after 18 matches, three points more than San Lorenzo, held 1-1 at Godoy Cruz, and River

Man U signs Argentina keeper Romero

Manchester United has signed Argentina goalkeeper Sergio Romero to a three-year deal on a free transfer. The 28-year-old Romero previously played for United manager Louis van Gaal at Dutch club AZ Alkmaar. Romero will provide competition for Spanish 'keeper David De Gea — currently pursued by Real Madrid — while Victor Valdes is set to be sold after Van Gaal said he refused to play in the reserves. "Sergio is a very talented goalkeeper," Van Gaal said. "He was a young keeper during my time at AZ Alkmaar and I am delighted he is joining Manchester United." Romero has played 62 matches for Argentina and played in the 2014 World Cup final against title-winner Germany. He made his senior club debut at Racing Club in 2007 before moving to AZ and most recently Italy's Sampdoria.

Victor Moses linked with Dynamo Kiev

Nigerian forward Victor Moses is once again linked with a move away from the Stamford Bridge, despite posting stellar performances for Chelsea in their ongoing summer preseason tour. Moses scored for Chelsea in their 1-1 draw against PSG two days after earning praises from manager Jose Mourinho, following his fine display in their 4-2 loss to New York Red Bulls and although Mourinho voiced his intentions to keep him, recent reports have suggested he might be heading to Ukraine. Ukraine football news outlet Ua-Football contained news on the 24 year old joining Dynamo Kiev, as a replacement for Sunderland new recruit Jeremain Lens. Dynamo according to the website want Moses on loan but, they face stiff competition for his services from the likes of Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham, who are eyeing a permanent deal for the man who has spent the last season on loan at Liverpool and Stoke City respectively. Already Stoke City failed in their move to include him in Chelsea's signin

Ramsey flattered by Barcelona interest

Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey admits he is flattered by interest from Barcelona and would be keen to play in Spain at some stage in his career. The Wales international was linked with a move to Camp Nou early in the summer after an impressive conclusion to the season with the Gunners. And the 24-year-old revealed he would love to have the chance to ply his trade in La Liga, though for now he wants to concentrate on challenging for silverware with Arsenal. "Obviously it’s very flattering," he toldThe Guardian. "They [Barcelona] did the treble last year and it’s just really nice to be linked with one of the best clubs in the world. "One day I would like to go over to Spain to play just to see what it’s like and to experience that. But at the moment I’m with Arsenal and I feel like this Arsenal team can go and be successful and challenge for things."

FG To Urged Privatise Government Assets Via Stock Exchange

Operators in the nation’s capital market have called on the Federal Government to use the Nigerian Stock Exchange, NSE to privatise public assets so that majority of Nigerians can benefit from the exercise. The operators noted that using the stock exchange would provide the needed transparency instead of allowing few people to benefit from the privatisation exercise. The operators further charged the Federal Government to channel the privatisation programme through the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE), for sustained, diverse economic benefits. The operators were reacting to President Muhammadu Buhari’s statement in the U.S. that his administration would continue with the major privatisation programme of past governments, with “improved moral architecture”. Mr. Oderinde Taiwo, National Coordinator, Proactive Shareholders Association of Nigeria, PROSAN, who spoke to Vanguard commended the president’s pronouncement, said that privatisation must be done through the capital market to ach

Arsenal smash Lyon for six

A blistering first half display saw Arsenal score four first half goals as they swept Lyon aside in a 6-0 win in the Emirates Cup. Olivier Giroud opened the scoring, diverting a Mesut Ozil cross beyond Lyon goalkeeper Anthony Lopes before the Frenchman turned provider for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. Youngster Alex Iwobi added a third, completing a well-worked team goal, before the impressive Aaron Ramsey latched on to an Ozil pass to finish from close range. Ozil added a fifth after the break, thumping a low strike beyond Lopes and into the bottom corner, and Santi Cazorla rounded off the scoring with a free kick late on. With a point awarded for every goal, Arsenal now top the group with nine, ahead of Villarreal, who beat Wolfsburg 2-1 earlier on Saturday. Lyon created the first opening of the game when Alexandre Lacazette's delightful flick played in Clinton N'Jie, but Emiliano Martinez was out quickly to make a low save. Clement Grenier hobbled off with what looked like

24 Superfruits You Need Now!

1. Acai Berries Açaí actually deserves some of the hype it gets, thanks to weapons grade antioxidant levels that clobber other Superfruit rivals like blackberries, strawberries, and blueberries. However, because this tiny berry hails from Brazil, it's not easy to find fresh. "I recommend powdered açaí berry, which can be added into a smoothie," says Glassman. "Not only is this an easy way to get super fruits into your diet, but it also helps mask the tart, sometimes bitter taste." 2. Apples Surprise! America's favorite fruit is a secret Superfruit, thanks in part to its red or green color. Apples are a great fiber source, but the skin contains quercetin, an antioxidant that packs antihistamine and anti-inflammatory power, and therefore may help protect you from heart disease and possibly allergic reactions. A study from St. George's Hospital Medical School in London found that people who eat five or more apples a week have better lung function than thos

Benefits of Fish Farming

Fish farming is the practice of raising fish in man-made ponds or tanks for human consumption. This is also known as aquaculture and has become widespread over the globe in the past few decades. Fish farming, like other types of farming, offers a plethora of benefits that can help and the environment Supply and Demand Fish farming allows for large supplies of fish to be farmed according to demand. Catching fish from the wild may not yield enough product to meet consumer demand and simultaneously keep the natural ecosystem in balance. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations estimates that by 2030, about 40 million tons of seafood will be necessary to keep up with demand. The ocean's ability to produce enough fish has diminished over the years, leaving aquaculture as the only method to keep up with this increasing demand. Preserving Natural Ecosystems Fish farming does not require the extensive capture of wild fish. They can be raised in tanks until they

Sustainable fish farming: five strategies to get aquaculture growth right

Aquaculture's impacts: Encouraging trends, but challenges remain On average, farmed fish convert feed to edible food as efficiently as poultry, making them an attractive option for expanding the global animal protein supply. However, as with all forms of food production, aquaculture isn't without its environmental impacts. As aquaculture began to boom in the 1990s, several concerns emerged such as the clearing of mangroves to make way for shrimp farms in Asia and Latin America, increased use of fishmeal and fish oil made from wild marine fish, and the generation of water pollution and shrimp and fish diseases. The aquaculture industry greatly has improved performance over the past 20 years, producing more farmed fish per unit of land and water, lowering the share of fishmeal and fish oil in many aquaculture feeds and largely stopping mangrove conversion. However, doubling aquaculture production without further increasing the industry's efficiency could lead to a do

Uproar as Nigerians in UK pay N10, 000 for BVN

Nigerians in London, United Kingdom, have expressed frustration over the compulsory payment of £30 (about N10, 000) for the registration of the Bank Verification Number, as directed by the Central Bank of Nigeria. Apparently sad over their plight, some of them during the week stormed the Nigeria High Commission in London to protest against the directive of the apex bank. Others took to the social media to vent their anger. The CBN had recently extended the deadline for the BVN registration from June 30 to October 31, 2015 as disclosed in a circular issued to all deposit money banks operating in the country. The Director, Banking and Payment Systems Department of the CBN, Mr. Dipo Fatokun, said the extension became imperative in order to give bank customers more time to participate in the enrolment exercise. The circular had read in part, “It has come to our notice that the BVN registration has elicited tremendous interest from the Nigerian banks’ customers who crowded the banking hal

UK to force out Nigerian students, others after graduation, Ban them from working

Nigerian students studying in theUnited Kingdom, and their counterparts from other countries, will be forced to leave the country after graduation. A fresh policy ordered by Home Secretary, Theresa May, seeks to ban foreign students, with the exception of those from EU countries, from working in Britain after completing their studies. The policy requires that they return to their countries and reapply for a visa to return and work in the country. It is argued that many students are using colleges as a “back door to a British work visa”. According to official figures, out of the 121,000 non-EU students that entered the UK in the 12 months to June 2014, only 51,000 left. This indicated a net influx of 70,000 students. Already, May has banned 870 UK colleges from taking foreign students as a means to stop student visas being used as an easy way to enter the UK before getting a job and claiming benefits. The new rules will deny non-EU students the right to work while in the UK

Man City Sign Fabian Delph from Aston Villa for £8m

The deal comes few days after the 25-year-old said he was staying at Villa Park, after City agreed to meet an £8m release clause on a four-and-a-half-year contract he signed in January. “He is an excellent player, I am looking forward to working with him,” City manager Manuel Pellegrini is quoted as saying by the club website. Delph, who has been handed shirt No. 18, will fly out to Australia over the weekend to join his new team-mates for pre-season training. He did not travel with Aston Villa squad to their pre-season training camp in Portugal. Aston Villa said in a statement: “Aston Villa can confirm that Fabian Delph has exercised the release clause in his contract and will join Manchester City. “We’d like to wish him success in his future career.” The former Leeds midfielder made 28 appearances for Villa last season, as they retained their top-flight status and reached the final of the FA Cup, where they were beaten 4-0 by Arsenal. He has been capped six times at full int
