Wenger backs medical staff and coaches despite more injuries

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger gave his backing to the Premier League club's medical staff and coaches on Friday despite the high number of injuries his squad continues to suffer. England midfielders Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Theo Walcott both came off early in the 3-0 Capital One Cup defeat by Championship (second tier) club Sheffield Wednesday in midweek and will both be out until after November's international break. Jack Wilshere, Danny Welbeck and Tomas Rosicky are all long-term injuries, while Mikel Arteta and Aaron Ramsey are also currently unavailable. "I trust my medical and coaching staff to do well, we are very well organised on that front," Wenger told a news conference ahead of Saturday's visit to Swansea City. "It's always a question we have to answer, when we have injuries, by analysing every single case and every single exercise. "You have not to over-analyse when players are injured. We have not many muscle injuries,

Nintendo delays first smartphone 'game'

Nintendo has announced its first smartphone 'game', but delayed its launch from the end of the year until next March. As some predicted, it was not a Super Mario game, but "Miitomo", an app in which players create their own avatars to talk to each other. The company's share price fell as much as 10 percent on the news. But one analyst said it was a typically cautious and prudent first step into smartphone gaming from Nintendo. Nintendo said that Miitomo would be a "free-to-start communication application". Players would create their own Mii avatars, which they could use to chat to other players, it said at a launch event in Tokyo on Thursday. It will also reportedly feature in-app purchases. The features have more in common with a social network than a traditional Nintendo game. Miitomo was designed as an introduction to Nintendo's other, yet to be announced, smartphone gaming efforts, the firm said, adding that it planned to have five apps

Deutsche Bank to cut 15,000 jobs

Deutsche Bank has said it will cut 15,000 jobs as it announced a third-quarter €6bn (£4.3bn) loss. Germany's biggest bank said it would cut 9,000 full-time jobs and 6,000 contractor roles. It is also planning to sell businesses employing 20,000 people over the next two years. By 2018, "we expect to see the benefits of our hard work and potentially be in the midst of a powerful turn-around," said John Cryan, co-chief executive. The cuts represent just less than 15% of the firm's total workforce. The bank's shares fell 5.5%in Frankfurt trading. Deutsche is trying to cut €3.8bn of annual costs as European banks struggle with sluggish economic growth in their home markets and stricter regulation. Cuts in Germany In times of low growth, reducing costs through job cuts is seen as a way to improve profits. The bank also plans to spin off Postbank with a stock market listing and sell its 20% stake in China's Hua Xia Bank. It has also said it will

Seven children die after migrant boats sink off Greece

At least seven children died when boats carrying migrants sank off Greece on Wednesday, as rescue workers battled to save more youngsters on the seashore in the latest desperate scenes in Europe's refugee crisis. Three adults also died as four vessels went down on the dangerous sea crossing from Turkey and more than 200 people, many suffering hypothermia, were rescued from one sinking off the north coast of the Greek island of Lesbos. Images from Lesbos, a major entry point for the huge flow of migrants trying to get to Europe, showed doctors attempting to revive unconscious children on the island's shoreline. Later in the evening, a drowned woman and the bodies of two children were found floating off the Greek island of Agathonisi, just a few kilometres from the Turkish coast. A one-year-old baby remained in a critical condition Wednesday night, according to port police. Patrol vessels, fishing boats and even locals on jet skis joined in efforts to search into the

Strike: NCAA, aviation unions' meeting adjourned for further consultation

The meeting between the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and trade unions in the sector over staff promotion dispute has been adjourned for further consultation. A final resolution of the dispute could not be reached at the meeting which took place at the NCAA's headquarters in Abuja till late Wednesday. The unions -- National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE) and the National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers (NAAPE) -- had threatened to shut the nation's airspace if NCAA refused to promote their members due for promotion. They had accused NCAA management of not adhering to the condition of service on promotion of workers and other welfare issues. The NCAA had insisted that the workers would only be promoted after passing a written examination in line with the directive of the Federal Government. Olayinka Abioye, Assistant General Secretary, NUATE, said on Thursday that the meeting was adjourned till a further date to enable the unions to

Sheikh Salman's 'exit strategy' boosts Platini's FIFA quest

Paris - Michel Platini's damaged bid to become FIFA president was boosted on Thursday when it emerged one of his main rivals could step aside if the Frenchman was cleared to run in the election. European football boss Platini's ambition to succeed his one time friend turned arch enemy Sepp Blatter is currently on hold as he serves a 90-day suspension. The ban was imposed over a "disloyal" $2 million (1.8 million euro) payment Platini received from Blatter on behalf of FIFA in 2011 for consultancy work carried out years before. But the UEFA chief's presidential chances improved with the news that Asian football head Sheikh Salman bin Ebrahim al-Khalifa could withdraw from the FIFA contest should Platini emerge unscathed from the investigation. That exit strategy was raised by FIFA executive committee member Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah in an interview with Olympic watchdog website insidethegames.biz. Sheikh Ahmed, a prominent International Olympic C

US economic growth slows sharply

US economic growth slowed sharply in the third quarter of the year. Gross domestic product grew at an annualised pace of 1.5% between July and September, according to the Department of Commerce, down from a rate of 3.9% in the second quarter. The slowdown was partly due to companies running down stockpiles of goods in their warehouses. On Wednesday, the Federal Reserve kept rates unchanged and said the economy was expanding at a "moderate" pace. Analysis: Andrew Walker, economics correspondent Yes, it's a sharp slowdown compared with the previous three months. But the biggest reason for it was companies running down stocks - meeting demand by selling stuff they already have in the warehouse. That is a process that has a limit. Sooner or later, they will feel they have sold enough and may want to start replenishing those stocks. Consumer spending remained fairly robust. Yes, it too did slow, but not by all that much. It grew by 0.8% in the three-month period,

India pledges $600m to help Africa

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced $600m (£393m) in assistance for development projects in Africa at a major summit in Delhi. More than 50 African leaders are attending the India-Africa Forum Summit, unprecedented in scale, in the Indian capital. Although India's trade with Africa has more than doubled to $72bn since 2007, it is still comparatively small. The meeting is being seen as an attempt by India to improve ties with Africa. A record number of African leaders, including South Africa's Jacob Zuma, Zimbabwe's Robert Mugabe, President Sisi of Egypt and Sudan's Omar al-Bashir are attending the summit - part of India's big push to increase its presence in Africa. 'Bright spots' Reports say the summit represents the highest number of foreign dignitaries to descend on India since 1983 and is thought to be the biggest ever overseas gathering of African leaders. Welcoming them, Mr Modi described India and Africa as the "two b

Martins wins surprise Nigeria recall

Striker Obafemi Martins has won his first Nigeria call-up since March 2013 after being named in the squad to face Swaziland in a World Cup qualifier. Martins admitted he was surprised to be in coach Sunday Oliseh's 23-man group for the two-legged tie, which will be played on 13 and 17 November. The 31-year-old told BBC Sport: "It was a bit of a shock, but a nice shock. "I'm very happy, because I have always worked hard, supported and respected all the players picked by the coaches." Martins was last called up by Nigeria in March 2013 for a 2014 World Cup qualifier against Kenya. Despite being his country's most in-form striker last year, alongside Ikechukwu Uche, he was omitted from the Brazil 2014 squad. However his good form has continued this season - he has struck 15 goals for MLS side Seatlle Sounders - and Martins is determined to make the most of his Super Eagles recall. "I thank coach Oliseh for this great opportunity. I'm just

Arsenal pair out for three weeks

Arsenal's England internationals Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain have been ruled out for around three weeks due to injury, manager Arsene Wenger revealed on Thursday. The pair were injured in the early stages of Arsenal's mid-week 3-0 League Cup defeat at Sheffield Wednesday, with Oxlade-Chamberlain sustaining a hamstring injury and Walcott, his replacement, picking up a calf problem. Arsenal are still waiting for scans to determine the full extent of their injuries, but Wenger said they would not return to action before next month's international break. "We hope they are light injuries, but they are out until after the international break," Wenger told the Arsenal website. "Nothing has changed since after the game. They are out, but the scans are today, it's 48 hours afterwards." The pair are due to miss Arsenal's matches against Swansea City, Bayern Munich and Tottenham Hotspur, as well as England's friendlies against Spa

Ramires signs new four-year Chelsea contract

London - Brazilian midfielder Ramires has extended his Chelsea contract until 2019, the Premier League champions announced on Thursday. Since signing from Benfica in 2010, the dynamic central midfielder has made 241 appearances for the club and collected five trophies, including the 2012 Champions League and last season's league title. "My family and I are very happy here in London and in the past five years the club has lifted every major trophy," the 28-year-old said in a statement on the Chelsea website. "I hope to be an important part of many more successes in the next four years." Ramires, whose previous contract was due to expire in 2017, has won over 50 caps for Brazil and was a member of the squad that finished fourth as hosts of last year's World Cup.

Nigeria sets SAfrica's MTN fine deadline

Nigeria's telecoms regulator said Thursday it has set a November 16 deadline for South African mobile giant MTN to pay a $5.2 billion fine for missing a deadline to disconnect unregistered SIM cards. "The deadline set for the payment of the fine is November 16," Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) spokesman Tony Ojobo told AFP. "The key issue is if MTN breached the law or not. Certainly, there was a breach. And if there is a breach, we will apply the law." Early in August the NCC issued a directive to mobile telecoms companies operating in Nigeria to deactivate all unregistered SIM cards within seven days or face severe sanctions. MTNAfrica's largest telecoms firm, missed the deadline to deactivate its 5.1 million unregistered subscribers, prompting a 200,000-naira ($1,000) fine for each unregistered SIM. The penalty saw the company's shares crash on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange and raised questions about the renewal of its licence in N

Astronaut takes spacewalk right before setting US record

NASA's yearlong spaceman, Scott Kelly, took his first spacewalk Wednesday just hours before setting a new U.S. flight record. Kelly and Kjell Lindgren floated out of the International Space Station for a bit of maintenance work. Their to-do list included greasing the station's big robot arm, routing cables, removing insulation from an electronic switching unit and covering an antimatter and dark matter detector. Kelly's identical twin, Mark, a retired astronaut, urged his brother to be careful but still have fun outside. "Don't forget to take a good selfie!" Mark said via Twitter. He commanded the mission that delivered the antimatter-hunting Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer in 2011; it was the next-to-last shuttle flight. Scientists want the device covered with a thermal blanket to keep it cooler and prolong its life. The spacewalk was held up slightly after Lindgren inadvertently switched on the water flow in his suit too soon. Mission Control wanted t

US sheriff: School officer fired after tossing student

A deputy was fired Wednesday after video showed him flipping a teen backward out of her desk and tossing her across a classroom, with the sheriff saying the officer did not follow proper procedures and training. Richland County Senior Deputy Ben Fields was told of his firing late Wednesday morning, Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott said. Fields had been a school resource officer at Spring Valley High School. The student was being disruptive and refused to leave the classroom despite being told by a teacher and administrator to do so, Lott said, and that's when Fields was brought in Monday to remove her from the class. She again refused, and Fields told her she was under arrest, Lott said. She continued to refuse, and at that point the video shows the deputy flipping the teen backward and then throwing her across the room. At that point, Lott said, Fields did not use proper procedure. "I can tell you what he should not have done: He should not have thrown that student,

Fences can't solve Europe's migrant crisis: Germany

Germany said Wednesday that Europe's migrant crisis cannot be solved with the construction of fences or walls at borders, after Austria said it would fence up its border with Slovenia to slow the influx. "We do not believe that the current migrant crisis that Europe is facing can be resolved with the building of fences or walls," said government spokesman Steffen Seibert, adding that the problem could only be dealt with if Europe stood united.

Can makeup cause you to age faster?

Companies are meant to use an organic label only if the ingredients are certified-organic. This is a no-brainer, right? But the beauty industry is so shockingly unregulated that you often don’t know what to believe. Face cream, lipstick, mascara and even body wash are often labelled ‘clinically tested’ or ‘clinically proven’ and words such as ‘natural’ or ‘organic’ claim various falsehoods. Here are some ingredients you need to be aware of: 1. Beware of lead poisoning. Lead is commonly found in lipstick and hair dye. It will never be listed as an ingredient because it's a contaminant. This is extremely troubling considering how much lipstick we swallow annually. 2. Phalates. Commonly found in fragrances, nail polish, deodorants and lotions, this common contaminant is linked to endocrine disruptors and can increase your chances of breast cancer, especially during early breast development in girls and reproductive birth defects in males and females. Look out for

Blatter blames FIFA crisis on Platini, England and USA

Sepp Blatter blames Michel Platini, England and the United States for igniting and escalating the corruption scandal engulfing FIFA. "At the start it was only a personal attack, it was Platini against me, then it was no longer only Platini against me," the suspended head of football's world governing body told Russian news agency Tass on Wednesday. "It was also those who had lost (hosting) the World Cups. "England against Russia (the 2018 hosts), and the United States who lost the (2022) World Cup to Qatar," the 78-year-old Swiss claimed. He said he as boss of FIFA and the World Cup had become pawns in a political game. "The football World Cup and the president of FIFA were only a ball in the middle of a game between super powers." For Blatter, Platini, the suspended head of European football and one of seven candidates for the February 26 election to succeed him, was the root cause of the scandal. "Platini wanted to be FIFA presiden

MTN seeks to reduce' $5.2bn Nigeria fine

Africa's biggest mobile phone operator, MTN Group, is in talks with Nigerian regulators to try to reduce a $5.2bn fine, two sources familiar with the matter said on Tuesday. The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) said on Monday it had imposed the penalty on the South African-based firm for failing to disconnect users with unregistered SIM cards. "MTN is talking to NCC with the view to revoking or reducing this fine," one source said. "There was bit of misunderstanding around this issue." Another source said MTN had been in talks with the NCC about the exact number of people using unregistered SIM cards when the deadline to disconnect them passed. "MTN was under the presumption that it can carry on business as usual because it was still in discussion with the regulators," the source said. If it stands, the penalty will wipe out more than two years of MTN's annual profits. Nigeria is MTN's biggest market by subscribers. An NCC s

Vitamin D might help kids with eczema

Daily vitamin D supplements might help children with eczema that gets worse in the winter, a new study suggests. When eczema, a chronic inflammatory skin disorder, flares up in the winter it's known as winter-related atopic dermatitis. Researchers found vitamin D significantly reduced the uncomfortable symptoms associated with this disorder. "While we don't know the exact proportion of patients with atopic dermatitis whose symptoms worsen in the winter, the problem is common," said study leader Dr. Carlos Camargo, of Massachusetts General Hospital's department of emergency medicine. "In this large group of patients, who probably had low levels of vitamin D, taking daily vitamin D supplements - which are inexpensive, safe and widely available - proved to be quite helpful," he said in a hospital news release. A common treatment for severe atopic dermatitis is the controlled use of ultraviolet light, which stimulates production of vitamin D in

Man City are derby favourites, says United boss Van Gaal

Former manager David Moyes was castigated for playing down Manchester United's chances during his short reign at Old Trafford, but present incumbent Louis van Gaal was at it on Friday ahead of the derby with Manchester City. Van Gaal, whose side are third in the Premier League, two points behind leaders City, enjoyed a 4-2 victory in the corresponding fixture last season but believes the visitors are expected to win the 170th derby on Sunday. "You have to ask the fans, it's not so important who is the favourite," Van Gaal told a news conference. "When you look at the facts they are first and we are second or third, they are the favourites I think." While City played at home against Sevilla in the Champions League on Wednesday, United had a long trip to Moscow where they drew 1-1 with CSKA. "We have to do our work, prepare our game, but we had one day less so it's more difficult for us," the Dutchman said. "But we have to do

Kane says Spurs ready for Klopp’s charged-up Liverpool

Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane expects Liverpool players to be pumped up and give "five percent extra" when they visit White Hart Lane on Saturday for the first game under their new manager Juergen Klopp. Having spent the international break with the England squad, which includes Liverpool duo Nathaniel Clyne and Danny Ings, Kane says it was obvious that Liverpool players were eager to impress Klopp. "Liverpool are going to have a new manager and they will be up for it. In the first couple of game everybody tries to impress so they will probably have that little five percent extra than usual," Kane told the British media. "We expect that. The Liverpool players at England could not wait to get back to start working under him (Klopp)." The 22-year-old striker is struggling to recapture the form he showed last season but was confident Spurs' superior fitness can get them the three points despite having lost their last five Premier League g

Allardyce calls Wenger ‘arrogant’ and a bad loser

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is arrogant and a bad loser who tries to influence referees through the media, the Frenchman's newly appointed Sunderland counterpart Sam Allardyce has said. Allardyce, who makes the comments in his new autobiography, serialised in The Sun, reveals the depth of loathing between himself and Wenger, who have been at odds ever since the Englishman was in charge of Bolton Wanderers. "I enjoyed beating Arsenal more than anyone when I was in charge at Bolton," Allardyce said. "We'd really got to them and Arsene Wenger hated us. "There was one time he wouldn't shake hands with me at Highbury because we got a draw there. I saw him ripping his tie off and throwing it on the floor in anger. "He takes it all very personally and has an air of arrogance. He's not one for inviting you into his office for a drink after the game. "The more I wound him up, the more I liked it. He tried to influence refs through th

Nobel discoveries on DNA repair now fueling cancer drug research

Cancer researchers are just beginning to understand the ramifications of the fundamental discoveries behind the 2015 Nobel Prizes in Chemistry, which were awarded on Wednesday to three scientists for explaining how cells repair mistakes in DNA that occur when cells divide. When deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) repair mechanisms fail, they predispose people to cancer. That is especially true of individuals with mismatch repair defects, a mechanism discovered by Paul Modrich of Duke University and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. Modrich, Tomas Lindahl and Aziz Sancar won the prize for "mechanistic studies of DNA repair." Their work mapped how cells repair DNA to prevent damaging errors from appearing in genetic information. Subsequent work by Dr. Bert Vogelstein of the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center and Richard Kolodner, then at Harvard Medical School and currently at the University of California, San Diego, showed mismatch repair defects are the chief cause of the mos

Toddler's head reattached to body after accident

Daily News reports that Australian toddler, Jaxon Taylor, was travelling with his mum and sister at about 120km/h when their car collided head-on with another vehicle on 15 September. The impact broke his c1 and c2 vertebrae and his collarbone, causing an "internal decapitation". The toddler's head was reattached to his neck. According to Australia’s 7 News, doctors expect 16-month-old Jackson Taylor to make a full recovery following an exhausting six-hour surgery. “A lot of children wouldn’t survive that injury in the first place, and if they did and they were resuscitated then they may never move or breathe again,” spinal surgeon Geoff Askin said. Rylea Taylor, the boy's mother was driving the family car with Jackson and his 9-year-old sister, Shane, when the accident happened. Rylea didn't suffer any injuries because of the car’s airbags, and Shane was sustained minor abdominal injuries. Little Jackson, however, was badly hurt. “The second I pulled h

3D printing used to diagnose deformities in unborn babies

When Michigan doctors saw a large mass on the face of a foetuslate in pregnancy, they feared it might block the baby's airway at birth. The doctors didn't know what the abnormality was, or if the infant would need lifesaving care in order to breathe. First time 'in utero' Use of 3D printing technology removed the guesswork, the team reported in the online edition of the journalPaediatrics. It's the first time 3D printing technology has been used in utero "to diagnose facial deformity and severity of airway risk with a newborn", said Dr. Albert Woo, a paediatric plastic surgeon at St. Louis Children's Hospital. The problem surfaced when the mother-to-be, age 22, was 30 weeks into pregnancy. The mother underwent an ultrasound, but the imaging did not provide enough information because of the way the foetus was positioned. She then underwent an MRI, but again the doctors couldn't be sure if the airways would be clear after birth. If the airw

Dortmund wish Klopp 'all the best'

Borussia Dortmund turned to Liverpool's best-known sons The Beatles for inspiration as they wished their former coach Jurgen Klopp their best, after the 48-year-old was appointed the Reds' new manager. "We heard the news today, oh boy! All the best at The Kop, Jurgen Klopp! All the best @LFC!," the Bundesliga club said in a tweet. The short message is inspired by the lyrics of The Beatles' "A Day in the Life" it starts with the line: "I read in the news today, of boy" and came with a photo montage of Klopp running across the street like the cover of the Liverpool band's iconic Abbey Road. The effort sparked an equally musical response from FC Liverpool: "Danke, @BVB! You'll Never Walk Alone." Former Bayern coach Ottmar Hitzfeld said Klopp is a perfect fit for Liverpool and that he had arrived at the Premier League club at the right time. "It will definitely be a long term project for him. He can really build on it a

O'Neill N. Ireland to make Euro splash

Northern Ireland manager Michael O'Neill pledged that his side would "make an impact" at the 2016 European Championship after securing a historic qualification for the tournament. Captain Steven Davis scored twice as O'Neill's men beat Greece 3-1 at Windsor Park in Belfast on Thursday to qualify for their first major championship since the 1986 World Cup in Mexico. It will be the first time Northern Ireland have ever appeared at a European Championship, but O'Neill says they will not travel to France to make up the numbers. "We're not just going to go to France and enjoy it," said O'Neill, whose side have risen from 88th to 35th in the FIFA world ranking during his tenure. "We're going to go and try to make an impact. I genuinely believe, fitness and availability willing, we can go there with a real optimism. "I'm very proud of what we've achieved. This is certainly the highest point of my career, either as a playe

UK Ebola survivor treated for 'unusual' complications

A British nurse who contracted Ebola in Sierra Leone was flown to a specialist London hospital unit on Friday, nearly nine months after she was discharged, due to an "unusual late complication". Nurse Pauline Cafferkey, who voluntarily went to the west African country to treat Ebola patients, was flown from a Glasgow hospital to London's Royal Free Hospital, which houses Britain's only isolation ward for Ebola patients. She had been admitted to hospital in Glasgow on Tuesday after feeling unwell. She was transferred early on Friday "due to an unusual late complication of her previous illness" ,said Professor Paul Cosford, medical director at Public Health England agency. "She was transported in a military aircraft under the supervision of experts. She will now be treated in isolation in line with nationally agreed guidelines. "The Scottish health authorities will be following up on a small number of close contacts of Pauline's as a precau

Ethics committee says Blatter had 'all his rights'

FIFA's ethics committee on Friday rejected claims by suspended FIFA president Sepp Blatter that he was not allowed to give evidence to the committee. "He had all his rights, including explaining himself in all necessary details. And with his lawyer," ethics committee spokesman Andreas Bantel told AFP. After Blatter's suspension on Thursday, his lawyers said: "President Blatter was disappointed that the ethics committee did not follow the code of ethics and disciplinary code, both of which provide for an opportunity to be heard."

Chelsea move has boosted my confidence, Pedro says

Spain forward Pedro believes his move from Barcelona to Chelsea in the close season has helped boost his confidence and make him a happier person. Pedro decided to quit boyhood club Barca after 11 years there and move to England after spending the majority of last term on the bench and Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho slotted him straight into his starting lineup. Although the London club have had a poor start to the season, Pedro has impressed and has scored two goals and made one assist in his eight appearances. "When someone gets to play, they gain rhythm, confidence, you're happier, you try out more things," Pedro said on the Spanish team website ( www.sefutbol.com) on Friday. "Leaving Barca was tough for me but I'm happy with the change," added the 28-year-old Canary Islander. Pedro said his fellow Spain players at Chelsea, former Barca team mate Cesc Fabregas, Diego Costa and Cesar Azpilicueta, had helped him adjust quickly to life in the Premier Le

Oil, gas firm shoots down reports of transaction

Mart Resources, the Canadian oil and gas company, has refuted media reports, it had entered into a definitive agreement or transaction regarding a sale of the company to Midwestern Oil & Gas Company Limited. It said it had not entered such a transaction, as reported in the Nigerian media, with any other party. “The press report has been removed from the Nigerian news agency's website as it is completely without merit and should be totally disregarded,” the company stated. Family source says Oscar Pistorius's parole is being DELIBERATELY delayed because authorities are worried pictures of him enjoying freedom will be 'unpopular'

Image
Oscar Pistorius's bid for freedom is being deliberately delayed because the authorities fear his release would spark a furious backlash, a family source told MailOnline. The Paralympian could remain behind bars indefinitely following another parole hearing stalled.  The failure of a review board to rule yesterday on the athlete's parole comes just weeks before an appeal court considers whether to convict him of murdering Reeva Steenkamp, meaning he could in jail indefinitely. If he is convicted of the higher charge, he will spend at least another 15 years inside. The Paralympian was due to be freed from jail in August and put under house arrest at his uncle's mansion, but an 11th hour intervention by the South African government led to a review of his parole. Two subsequent hearings of the parole review board failed to decide on Pistorius's fate – prompting speculation that the decision to keep the 28-year-old in jail is politically-motivat
