Rooney: Costa was my Player of the Year

Wayne Rooney has revealed he voted for Chelsea striker Diego Costa to win the PFA Players' Player of the Year award last season.

Costa scored 20 goals in all competitions for the Blues in his first season in England, but also courted controversy for his confrontational style.

The 27-year-old was criticised again after his battle with Ryan Shawcross in Chelsea's 1-0 defeat to the Potters last weekend.                                                                                                                                                But, with Costa set to line up against England on Friday, Rooney has spoken of his admiration for the former Atletico Madrid star.
"I actually voted for Costa as player of the year last season because I thought he was a huge player for Chelsea," said the Manchester United and Three Lions captain.
"I strongly believe that’s why they became champions.

"Obviously it hasn’t gone as well for him as it did last season but I think he is a fantastic player.

"He’s a fighter. That’s part of his game and it’s going to be very difficult for anyone to ask him not to do that. I feel that’s in him – that fight.                                                                                                                                  "He thrives on that and that gets his team-mates going as well.”
