Strike: NCAA, aviation unions' meeting adjourned for further consultation

The meeting between the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and trade unions in the sector over staff promotion dispute has been adjourned for further consultation.

A final resolution of the dispute could not be reached at the meeting which took place at the NCAA's headquarters in Abuja till late Wednesday.

The unions -- National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE) and the National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers (NAAPE) -- had threatened to shut the nation's airspace if NCAA refused to promote their members due for promotion.

They had accused NCAA management of not adhering to the condition of service on promotion of workers and other welfare issues.

The NCAA had insisted that the workers would only be promoted after passing a written examination in line with the directive of the Federal Government.

Olayinka Abioye, Assistant General Secretary, NUATE, said on Thursday that the meeting was adjourned till a further date to enable the unions to consult with their members.

"We have not concluded our negotiation but substantial progress has been made toward resolving the dispute.

"We are to go back to our members and discuss with them before returning at a later date for further discussion with management," Abioye said.

Sam Adurogboye, the NCAA's Acting General Manager, Public Relations, also said that the union leaders and the NCAA management would reconvene in Lagos at a yet to be announced date.
