How to reinvent yourself at work

The start of the great Year is an awesome time for a fresh start. But change is tough. When I sold my real estate business, which I had built for 30 years, I was unprepared for the personal challenges I’d need to overcome. Reinventing myself in a new career was so much harder than I expected. If you’ve been dreaming about totally changing your career, here are a few things that will help you along the way. 1. There’s no such thing as a total reinvention. The best you can do is “repackage” yourself! When I sold my real estate business, I needed to figure out who I wanted to be in my next chapter, so I sat down and wrote a list of every job I ever held and what I liked and disliked about each. There were 23 different jobs on my list and to my surprise, I found I liked the same two things–I love an audience and I’m really good at marketing! So my list of potential new careers that could build on my strengths was a short one. I decided I was either going to start a PR company or an advert...

Ways To Make Money As A Corper

To an average corps member in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Scheme, the current living allowance paid by the Nigerian Government isn’t sufficient to cater for their daily needs. In an effort to cushion the effect of the money drought, some who still have their parent’s back depend on supplementary funding from home. If you are one, know that such support wouldn’t last forever. Start thinking of alternative means of survival on your own. The following tips should help. Private Teaching This is an age-long tradition that had kept many people going all through their university life. It wouldn’t be a bad idea to continue with the tradition. You indicate your interest in teaching children at home to everyone around you. It is always advantageous here for you if you got posted to a school. The teachers, the students, the members of your host community, not leaving out your fellow corps members could be helpful. It could involve you placing an advert of that through whatever means ...

Why brands need to take bigger risks

Strange and dangerous things happen every day, some representing bold and risky breakthroughs. On October 24, 2014, Alan Eustace, senior vice president of knowledge at Google, a respected engineer and leader, made waves by jumping from the stratosphere, breaking the world record previously set by Felix Baumgartner in 2012. Wearing a specially designed spacesuit, Alan ascended in a balloon to a height of more than 25 miles and then jumped into space, reaching a peak speed of 833 mph (greater than the speed of sound) as he plummeted toward Earth. Even more interesting, Eustace planned the jump in total secrecy — a private initiative with a small, dedicated team of experts, without the support of one single dollar in sponsorship money. Eustace did it because he wanted to do it: One man guided by passion and compelled by the sheer risk of the jump, resulting in a new world record and opening up the stratosphere for research. The fact that the jump was orchestrated by a small team working ...
